Multnomah Days Miscellany

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Colette Cassinelli (yes, she’s Village Beads’ Michelle’s sister-in-law) has added a great set of Multnomah Days Parade pictures to the newly created Flickr group for Multnomah Village. This group is open to everyone, so feel free to go to Flickr and join the group. If you use the following tags, it will make it easier for us all to find your images.

Thanks Collette for all the great pix! I checked ‘em out when we were still in Maui, and it was nice to see everyone having a good time.

That said, I’ve heard from several sources  that the parade is getting a little too big, and seems to go on forever with all the groups that are coming out to be included. There were a couple of parade entries that have caused some additional comments, which I won’t share here, but you can get the gist of things by checking out the Letters to the Editor in this month’s Multnomah Village Post. According to everyone, there were certainly more people in the Village this year - perhaps the fact that it wasn’t 200 degrees helped. Man, last years parade was HOT even in the morning.

Yeah, and I agree with Commissioner Adams on this one - many of the clowns are pretty scary.

Have a Great Day, Multnomah!

Friday, August 17th, 2007

For the first time in a long time, we’re missing Multnomah Days. If you need me, I’ll be in Maui. This means that our “secret spot” between the bus shelter and the curb on the corner of Capitol and 35th will be available. It also means that we won’t have any pictures of this year’s event.

So this would be a good time to mention that I’ve created a Flickr group for Multnomah Village with exactly ZERO content in it! So if you take pictures of the parade or general festivities, come join the group and use the following tags:

We visit the Maplewood Picnic

Maplewood Picnic Panorama

What’s this you ask? Well, of course it’s a clumsily stitched panorama of last weekend’s Maplewood Picnic! (click it - it gets bigger) We all headed over to Maplewood Elementary for the big neighborhood shindig, put on by the Maplewood Neighborhood Association. Even though this is not a school event, it’s held on the grounds of the school and quite a few of Jr. V’s friends were there.

We didn’t go to this event last year - I can’t figure out why not, but we certainly won’t miss it next year. They really put on the dog. The hot dog, that is. As well as free popcorn, ice cream, coffee, soda water, iced tea and cupcakes! We donated a few bucks after grabbing like our 200th thing of popcorn. As you can see, there were several tents set up - all the free food was along the blacktop, above, and the community booths were out along the ball field. At some point the police showed up with a paddywagon (do they still call them that?) and all the kids piled into the back to be locked in for a bit. I vividly remember when I was a kid, walking home from school, our route took us past the police station, and of we were really lucky - we could talk them into putting us in a jail cell for a while. Some fascinations are timeless I guess. {Insert Lindsey Lohan joke here.}

The new playground is up and in full effect! It was literally crawling with kids the whole time.

Another view of the great new playground.

Did I mention there was live music, and a raffle? Lots of fun was had, and despite threatening clouds, it never rained. We’ll definitely go again next year. Thanks Maplewood NA!

Gabriel Park Skatepark Open House Tonight at 7!

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Come out to the Multnomah Center tonight from 7:00 - 8:30PM to review and comment on the design for the upcoming skatepark at Gabriel Park. This is the second of two of these open houses. Not sure what room these are in, but there will surely be signage. Multnomah Art Center is at 7688 SW Capitol Highway. Call 503-823-6191 with questions.

Southwest Charter School Open House on 7/31

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

There is a Southwest Charter School open house this Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:30PM at the Multnomah Center. NOTE that there is also a final design meeting for the new Gabriel Park skatepark on the same evening, although I don’t anticipate much audience crossover. The skatepark has the auditorium last time, but I anticipate that they may have to find a smaller space this time around, due to what I anticipate should be a good turnout for the Charter school.

SW Charter School has a website (on which they need to fix their extended ASCII characters, by the way), which is full of information except for one key point. The cost. They define their mission as follows:

Southwest Charter School is a small, public school community that emphasizes safety and caring; a place where neither race nor economic status will determine a child’s potential for success.

There’s been lots of talk about this school in the news over the past year or so. Especially surrounding their unsuccessful quest to rent the former Smith School building from PPS. I’m thinking of popping into this meeting just to find out where they’re going to be. Actually, I don’t really understand the concept of charter schools. I know they’re some sort of hybrid between public and private, but that’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge on the subject. I should do some research, although it would take some kind of major sea-change in the quality of PPS before I would even consider moving Jr. V away from Maplewood, even if I could afford it.

NCES.gov tells us this about charter schools:

A public charter school is a publicly funded school that, in accordance with an enabling state statute, has been granted a charter exempting it from selected state or local rules and regulations. A charter school may be newly created, or it may previously have been a public or private school; it is typically governed by a group or organization (e.g., a group of educators, a corporation, or a university) under a contract or charter with the state. In return for funding and autonomy, the charter school must meet accountability standards. A school’s charter is reviewed (typically every 3 to 5 years) and can be revoked if guidelines on curriculum and management are not followed or the standards are not met.

Here is The list of Portland Charter Schools at the PPS Website.

Here’s an interesting site (GreatSchools.net), although it’s infested with pop-up ads, about public and private schools, including charter schools. It has reviews on it, etc. and this interesting article - Seven Things to Know About Charter Schools.

Again though, missing the eighth thing, which is the cost.

Basketball Time Again - Thanks, Search Statistics

Friday, July 20th, 2007

So I was looking through my web statistics (you regular readers know how I am about that sort of thing….) and someone just came to this site via a search that led to this post: Shootin’ Hoops With JC. Which reminded me of how much Jr. V enjoyed that activity.

That activity, by the way, is Riversgate Church’s Multnomah Village Basketball Camp. A short visit to their site confirms that yes indeed, it’s happening again this summer. August 6-10 from 6-8PM. For Girls and boys ages 6-13. There was a HUGE turnout last year, and everyone got shirts, basketballs, and a great cookout on the last night. Visit the site at the link above to register.

Mrs. V and I enjoyed having our evenings “off” while Max was learning to play.

Multnomah Village Harry Potter Events

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

It’s that time again, Harry Potter fans. It’d be pretty much impossible NOT to know that the 7th and final book in the series is going to be released this week. Of course, Annie Bloom’s Books will be having an event leading up to sales of the book at 12:01 AM Saturday morning. The fun begins at 10PM, in the parking lot behind the bookstore (that’s the Multnomah Boulevard side…). Annie Bloom’s closes at the regular time, but the event begins at 10PM and then everyone will troop around to the store and get their copies of the book at midnight. I remember two years ago when this happened there was a stream of kids heading home just after midnight, where presumably they stayed awake reading… The last book was great, so hopefully this one will be as good. I’ve been reading this series as well, and am curious as to what wil become of the characters.

Here’s the blurb from Annie Bloom’s site…

Please join us in celebrating the release of the seventh and final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Our party will begin at 10 PM on Friday, July 20th. The book will go on sale at 12:01 AM! First, we’ll have fun with a costume runway, fairground games like ring toss and horseshoes, a trivia contest, and an area for displaying your Harry Potter art - so pick up your pens, crayons, or paint brushes and start drawing!

Also, beginning at 7:00 PM on July 20, you can enter to win a trip for 4 to London in the “Independent Muggles for Harry Potter” sweepstakes.

You can pre-order Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows now. If you prepay, we’ll give you a coupon for $10 off your next purchase!

Our Harry Potter T-shirt raffle is over, but we’ve set aside a handful of child-sized shirts to give away as prizes at the Party.

Here’s the link to pre-order the book from Annie Bloom’s

Remember when this happened last time? I do, it was almost exactly two years ago: Here’s my post from back then..

Sweets Etc. is in on the fun as well, with costume contests and prizes. All starting at 10PM.

Jr. V and I stopped into Thinker Toys as part of our little research trip this evening, and although they are not having any late night events - they’ve got your Harry Potter merchandise needs covered. The stuff is right inside the door, to your right - so stock up on those last-minute costume needs ahead of time.

Author Nanci Hamilton at Annie Bloom’s Tuesday (tomorrow) Night

Monday, July 9th, 2007

OK, I’m shamelessly copying and pasting this text from the email that just came in via the Multnomah Villagers Yahoo! group (no relation to me), sorry Bernadette - consider yourself a “guest poster”

Author event on Tuesday evening at Annie Bloom’s:

Here is the event link:

Time: Tuesday, July 10, 2007 7:30 PM
Location: Annie Bloom’s Books
Title of Event: Nanci Hamilton presents Portland’s Multnomah Village

In this pictorial retrospective, author, longtime Portland resident, and historian Nanci Hamilton has gathered more than 200 images from local collections of vintage photographs and other visual memorabilia to trace the unique story of Portland’s Multnomah Village.

Once rolling countryside and bucolic dairy farmland, the area that became Multnomah Village was transformed when the Oregon Electric railroad line connecting Portland to Salem placed a station here in 1908 and brought Multnomah within 15 minutes of Portland’s downtown core. The electric train opened the way for individual families to build the charming homes of their dreams. Over the next 20 years, as the rise of the automobile transformed transportation options, the village continued to grow and thrive, with its own post office, grocery stores, pharmacy, movie house, churches, school, and bank to meet the needs of those living nearby. The subsequent rise of shopping centers and large retail grocery chains led to a change in the character of the village, which was annexe  piecemeal by the city of Portland beginning around 1950. The former village center is now an eclectic yet dynamic mix of shops, restaurants, and galleries tucked into the storefronts of a generation ago. The “bones” of the village as it was in the past remain visible.

This sounds pretty interesting, and I’m definitely going to buy a copy of this book. I’ll try to get up there Tuesday night, maybe I’ll see you there!

Multnomah Village Events Calendar

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

So I’ve been thinking about integrating a calendar feature for a little while now, but haven’t done so because of the work invovled with gathering information and keeping it updated. So I was happy to discover that the Multnomah Village Business Association has done the work for me! Well, for us. I’ll be adding a sidebar link to this, but for now..

The MVBA Multnomah Village Events Calendar is here.
