Now that’s more like it

Last weekend, we made our regular jaunt up the hill to grab breakfast at O’Connor’s, and I have to say, we had the best service we’ve had there in a long time. I’ve blogged before about my particular hatred of sitting around for some interminable time waiting for a check after you’re done eating, and how this is a regular feature of pretty much every O’Connnor’s visit. Not this time! Our waitress was right on time with everything we could ask for, all through the meal and even brought the check before I started looking around for it! Only Mrs.V will understand just what a big deal that is to me. Thanks O’Connor’s! We’d be back either way, but thanks for the service.

Aw, c’mon….you’re not suggesting O’Connor’s could compete with Hillsdale Pub for abysmal service, are you?!

    Heh.

However, a caveat: Several of the wait staff at the HP are really cool people….they just shouldn’t be waiting tables.

As someone who has worked in the service industry a long time, I always like to give the benefit of the doubt to waiters - especially when it’s busy.

I do not disagree with that - and I’m not REALLY complaining about O’Connor’s, which is certainly our most-visited breakfast eatery. When it’s busy you’re right - serving is a hard job. But it was certainly noticeable last weekend, how different our experience was from the usual.

I did some time in the service industry too, and I definitely try to give the benefit of the doubt to wait staff. I tip generously too, perhaps more so than I should, but I’m quite conscious of how little these folks are paid.

I’m talking about situations when it’s NOT busy, when the kitchen is fully staffed, and when servers just don’t trouble themselves to make that first visit to our table until we’ve been sitting there in full view for 10-15 minutes or so. Or later in the meal, when you make obvious eye contact from across the room and they change course so as not to have to deal with your special request or whatever.

Clearly I’m no longer talking exclusively about Hillsdale Pub….but both of these problems have occurred there more than once.

You’re not the only one bothered by the service at O’Connor’s:
